About ABA Therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a leading therapy for supporting children's development. As experts in ABA, we're dedicated to using it to help your child realize their fullest potential.

ABA Therapy

At Pathways to Progress, our therapists provide individualized, one-on-one ABA therapy. These tailored treatment plans are developed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) after a comprehensive initial assessment, where they learn about your child's developmental needs and your family's concerns and goals. These plans include targeted programs or "lessons" designed to promote positive behaviors, teach age-appropriate skills, and reduce challenging behaviors. Our compassionate approach emphasizes assent-based learning, and the teaching methods are adapted to each child's specific needs.

ABA therapy is considered the gold standard in behavioral interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder. Our ABA therapy is dedicated to helping your child reach their full potential. ABA therapy is highly effective and the best approach to learning and development in autistic children.

Does ABA Therapy Work for Autism?

The Simple Answer: YES

The Complex Answer:
Every child's needs are unique, requiring varying levels and durations of care. However, research indicates that children receiving two or more years of intensive behavioral intervention often demonstrate significant progress. ABA remains a leading evidence-based treatment for autism and is frequently the only therapy covered by federal/state agencies and commercial insurance.

What Treatment Works?

  • Family Guidance

Active family participation is essential for successful ABA therapy. At P2P, family guidance is a priority and a core part of ABA therapy. We require bi-weekly meetings between caregivers and their child's BCBA to discuss progress and provide strategies for extending skills learned at the center to home and community settings.

  • Highly trained and consistent clinical supervisors and therapists (BCBAs and RBTs).

Consistent care is crucial for children with autism spectrum disorder. Experienced and dedicated professionals are essential, and therapist continuity significantly contributes to successful ABA therapy outcomes. We prioritize this stability for both our team and the families we serve.

  • A personalized program designed to address a child's unique developmental needs.

Children with autism spectrum disorder have diverse communication abilities. Some are non-verbal and require support in developing communication skills, while others may be verbal but experience challenges such as repetitive behaviors, self-injury, or social skill deficits. Because each child is unique, a comprehensive assessment by a BCBA is essential before developing an individualized intervention plan.

What is Targeted in ABA Therapy programs?

The focus will be tailored to your child's individual needs, but commonly includes:

  • Adaptive Living Skills (feeding, toileting, bathing)

  • Communication Skills (expressive and receptive language)

  • School Readiness Skills (imitation, categorizing, matching)

  • Reduce Maladaptive Behavior (aggression, elopement, self-injury, and property destruction)

  • Social Skills (interactive play, initiating conversation, responding to questions from peers)

What Does a Typical Day of In-Home ABA Therapy Look Like?

At Pathways to Progress, we believe that early intervention is key for maximizing progress, particularly for young learners requiring intensive support. While many of our clients are between the ages of 2 and 6, we serve children of all ages. We currently focus on providing in-home ABA therapy.

  1. Each morning, therapists meet at your house during the assigned hours.

  2. Therapists will pair with their child and use play based teaching in the child's natural environment. Each session focuses on developing and improving multiple skills. For example, a session might involve teaching a child to request toys, match pictures or objects, follow clean-up instructions, and learn hand-washing routines after snacks.

  3. Throughout the entire session, therapists collect data to monitor the child's progress toward therapy goals. A child's "baseline" represents their initial success rate with a given goal—for example, a child might initially respond to their name only 20% of the time. Through repeated sessions using varied teaching methods, their skill acquisition may improve, progressing from 30% to 50%, and eventually reaching 80% or higher.

  4. At the end of the session, the therapist will give a brief summary of the progress achieved for the day.

What are some commonly asked questions?

What is ABA Therapy?

You might be wondering, "What is ABA therapy for autism?" ABA therapy is the leading evidence-based treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder. Our centers are dedicated to helping your child reach their full potential. For many children, ABA therapy is the most effective way to achieve their individual goals.

Does ABA Therapy Mean My Child is "Stuck" at a Table All Day Repeating the Same Tasks?

Absolutely not! P2P is committed to creating a stimulating learning environment. While structured activities like table work are sometimes incorporated (especially for school preparation), we focus on a wide range of skills. We utilize two primary ABA methods: Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Natural Environment Training (NET). DTT takes place in a dedicated space and includes therapist-led floor play, table activities, matching exercises, and more. NET occurs in a larger, engaging play area where children lead the activities, and therapists support them in appropriate play, name recognition, sharing, motor skill development, and other goals. ABA therapy utilizes a diverse range of techniques and methods.

How Expensive is ABA Therapy?

Most private health insurance plans cover ABA therapy, and P2P is in-network with many major insurers in Texas. However, navigating health insurance can be complex. Our Operations Managers and insurance teams will verify your insurance eligibility and help you understand your coverage options and out-of-pocket costs. Let us handle the details!

How are Parents Involved?

Family involvement is critical for successful ABA therapy. At P2P, family guidance is a core component of our program. We require bi-weekly meetings between guardians and their child's BCBA to facilitate ongoing communication and provide training on how to apply the skills learned at the center to home and community settings.
